Friday, October 28, 2011, was Limestone Community High School's fourth "early out" day. What were the teachers doing on this early out day? They were analyzing data from the T1 (term one) common academic assessments, improving T2 academic assessments, and/or working on teaching strategies to improve student engagement!
During the general meeting, the new Student Success Team, comprised of Tom Bell, Rebecca Coovert, Cathy Largent, Abby Tyra, Kara Weyhrich, John Waltz, and chaired by social worker Erin Walthall, gave an update on the the progress being made so far with student referrals and interventions. The IPI (Instructional Practices Inventory) team (Lisa Bentley, Zack Binder, Rob Fitch, Ben Ginzel, Briana Nannen, Greg Robinson, Jim Ryder, Stacey Seals, Jennifer Sergent, Tara Stout) presented the data from the IPI walkthrough conducted on September 28. Limestone Community High School is very close to reaching the student engagement goal set at the beginning of the school year. The team also shared photos of what teachers are doing to display student work in classrooms throughout the building.
The afternoon gave teachers the opportunity to collaborate with department members. Some departments used the time to continue analysis of T1 assessments. Some departments used the time to improve T2 assessments. While other departments collaborated on new teaching strategies implemented since the September 30 SIP. The goal of all collaboration is to improve student learning.
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Teaching Standards covered during the afternoon were:
Collaborative Relationships--The teacher develops and maintains collaborative relationships to support student learning and well-being.
Assessment--The teacher understands various assessment strategies and uses them to support continuous development of all students.
Instructional Delivery--The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
The target for the day was to improve the term assessments and/or teaching strategies through collaboration with department members. Teachers worked collaboratively to answer essential questions. At the conclusion of the day's activities, teachers were required to complete and submit an exit ticket that answered the question, "What did I gain or learn from collaborating with my colleagues today that will improve student learning?"
The next SIP day is Friday, November 10.
