Teacher Institue, Wednesday, November 23, 2011

11/23/2011

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wednesday, November 23, was Limestone Community High School's second teacher institute. What were the teachers doing during this five-hour day?  They were learning more about Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) data, conducting research, giving presentations to the entire staff, and collaborating with department members.

This year marks Limestone's third year of administering MAP reading and math tests to our students.  The entire institute was planned, prepared, and facilitated by Limestone's own Leanne Bonifas.  Miss Bonifas is our math lab tutor and responsible for administering the MAP tests to our students.  The institute began with Miss Bonifas presenting the historical MAP data to the staff.  The data shows that Limestone students are learning!  Not only does MAP give a RIT score on each student, but both the reading and math tests are broken down into goal descriptors.  The math tests scores five goal descriptors.  The reading test scores four goal descriptors.

Teachers were divided into nine groups (one for each goal descriptor) and spent time in the computer labs researching their particular descriptor.  Each group presented a PowerPoint explaining the descriptor and identifying websites teachers can use as resources to help our students who are struggling in a particular descriptor area.  After the presentations, teachers collaborated with department members to discuss where and in what courses each teacher incorporates the various descriptors into their lessons.  In addition, they all examined the historical MAP data in greater detail.  All teachers were required to complete an exit ticket.  Teachers had the last hour of the day to return to their classrooms and work on term assessments.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Teaching Standards covered during the afternoon were:Human Development and Learning--The teacher understands how individuals grow, develop, and learn and provides learning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.

Assessment:  The teacher understands various formal and informal assessment strategies and uses them to support the continuous development of all students.

The target for the day was to gain a better understanding of the goal descriptor components of the math and reading portions of the MAP tests.  Miss Bonifas and the faculty did a tremendous job working together, researching, sharing, and presenting the information.  The day was informative, productive, and beneficial for all teachers in attendance.

The next school improvement day is the teacher institute on Friday, December 9.
